Clerio Vision’s history began in the 1980s at the University of Rochester. Here a team of scientists invented groundbreaking chirped pulse amplification, an underlying technology key to femtosecond lasers. In 2003, Bausch + Lomb engaged with Dr. Wayne Knox, now Clerio’s chief science officer, to investigate ways to apply this technology in the contact lens space. This collaboration lasted for approximately 10 years and eventually led to the university having intellectual property around which a new startup could form.

What became the founding team of Clerio Vision had previously worked with the University of Rochester Medical Center in the cardiovascular and clinical trials space. We had credibility with the university, and we saw exciting potential in the technology. That’s when, in 2014, Clerio Vision was founded to commercialize LIRIC (laser induced vision change), a novel, noninvasive method to correct human vision.

In 2019 Cleiro acquired Hydrogel Vision, the manufacture of Extreme H2O contact lenses. Their ultra-hydrating hydrogel material worked perfectly with our LIRIC technology. This, along with their long-standing expertise in CL manufacturing and distribution, make it possible to bring our first contact lens offering to market in 2022.

Clerio Vision has raised approximately $40 million in financing from Safar Partners, Stonehenge Growth Equity, Armory Square Ventures, prominent angel investors and the National Science Foundation.  We have teams in Rochester, NY, Florida and California working in research, manufacturing and sales.
